Stereoscopic VR is the fundamental basis of filming 3D virtual reality content
Virtual reality has been around for more than a century now. Many of you might now be aware of a device called Stereograph which was invented by Charles Wheatstone in 1830. Even though the underlying concept of virtual reality has been around for so long, it took us so many years to realise the implications and potentials of the same.
Immersive technologies and experiences will become the new content formats in the future. It will be a very futuristic sci-fi kind of upgrade to our current video content. Though there are various ways in which a 360 degree 3D virtual reality content is shot, in this article we will talk about stereoscopic VR. Stereoscopic cameras and filming are central to shooting virtual reality content.
In stereoscopic VR, two lenses are used to shoot two different angles of the same object. In these two different angles, there is one for each eye which creates a sense of depth and immersion. The final product requires a virtual reality headset for viewing.
What is important to note here is that careful work is required in both production and post-production stage. Two different angles are shot in the production stage while these two are stitched together in the post-production stage of VR film making process. A seamless stereoscopic virtual reality video experience is difficult to produce and requires a great deal of precision since two lenses are involved and the images or videos hence filmed might look disoriented if not stitched properly together.
